What Stronger Insurer Results Mean for Tradies at Renewal Time

A healthier insurance market does not automatically mean cheaper or simpler cover for trade businesses

The information on this website is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation, or needs. Consider seeking personal advice from a licensed adviser before acting on any information.

APRA’s latest general insurance statistics point to a sector that is in a stronger financial position than it was during the worst of recent inflation, repair-cost and catastrophe pressures.
For Australian tradies, that sounds positive at first glance: a well-capitalised insurance market is better placed to pay claims, support recovery after major loss events and keep products available across higher-risk occupations and regions.

However, stronger insurer margins do not necessarily mean premiums will fall quickly, or that every policy will become easier to obtain. Insurers are still pricing for a long list of risks that matter directly to trades businesses, including severe weather, vehicle repair costs, tool theft, liability claims, supply chain delays and rising labour rates. Even where market conditions improve, underwriters may remain selective about higher-risk work, subcontractor exposure, hot works, height work, excavation and regional catastrophe risk.

The practical message for tradies is to treat renewal as a business review, not just another bill. If your turnover has changed, you have taken on larger jobs, added apprentices, bought new plant, upgraded your ute or started working on different sites, your existing cover may no longer match your real exposure. The same applies if replacement costs have moved since you last listed your tools, trailers, materials or machinery.

Key areas to check before accepting a renewal include:

  • Whether tool, plant and equipment values reflect current replacement prices, not what you paid years ago.
  • Whether public liability limits meet contract, landlord, council or principal contractor requirements.
  • Whether exclusions or endorsements affect the work you actually perform day to day.
  • Whether your business interruption or income protection arrangements would genuinely help if you could not trade after a claim or injury.
  • Whether excesses, sub-limits and unattended vehicle conditions could reduce a payout when you need it most.

It is also worth separating premium affordability from policy adequacy. Cutting cover to save cash can be tempting when materials, fuel and wages are already stretching margins, but a cheaper policy may leave expensive gaps. A better approach is to review your risk profile, update records, compare excess options and consider whether different policy sections can be adjusted without weakening the protection your business relies on.

Using a structured tool to review insurance sums insured can help identify where values may be too low or unnecessarily high. From there, comparing cover options can give tradies a clearer view of what the market is offering and where professional advice may be worthwhile.

A stronger insurance sector is good news, but the real win for tradies comes from having cover that matches the work, assets and cash flow risks of the business today.
