Recent industry reporting on the latest insurance complaints environment points to a clear message for Australian small businesses: the hardest part of insurance is often not buying a policy, but relying on it when something goes wrong.
Disputes continue to arise around claim delays, declined claims, settlement amounts, policy exclusions and communication breakdowns between customers and insurers.

For business owners, this matters because a contested claim can quickly become a cash flow problem. A damaged premises, stolen tools, cyber incident or liability allegation may already interrupt operations. If the claim then stalls because records are incomplete, sums insured are outdated or the policy wording does not respond as expected, the financial pressure can intensify. This is especially challenging for SMEs and sole traders that do not have large reserves to absorb weeks or months of disruption.

The lesson is not simply to buy more cover. It is to understand what the cover is designed to do, where its limits sit, and what evidence may be needed at claim time. Business interruption insurance, for example, can be valuable, but only if the indemnity period, gross profit calculation and insured events reflect the way the business actually operates. Property and contents cover also need regular review as equipment, stock, fit-outs and replacement costs change. Businesses can use tools to estimate sums insured before comparing policy options or speaking with an adviser.

Claims disputes also highlight the importance of documentation. Keep asset registers, purchase invoices, maintenance records, contracts, safety procedures, staff training notes and photos of key equipment or premises. For professional services, file notes and written client instructions can be just as important. These records may help demonstrate the value of a loss, the cause of damage, or the steps taken to manage risk before an incident occurred.

Another practical response is to treat insurance as part of a broader risk management plan, rather than an annual renewal task. Review exclusions, excesses, sub-limits and notification requirements before accepting a renewal. Ask how a policy would respond to realistic scenarios such as a customer injury, supplier failure, ransomware attack, storm damage or a key item of equipment being unavailable. The more clearly a business understands its obligations and cover before a claim, the better placed it is to avoid surprises when the pressure is on.
