Recent insurance industry reporting on AI accountability should be read carefully by allied health practices, not just large insurers.
The issue is simple: organisations are adopting AI tools faster than they can explain who is responsible when the tool produces an error, uses the wrong data or influences a decision that later causes harm.

The reporting followed an Australian survey of senior finance leaders using or assessing AI agents in financial processes. It found that a meaningful share of organisations could not clearly identify accountability for a serious AI error, while many lacked the in-house expertise to explain how their systems worked. Although the survey focused on finance and insurance, the message travels easily into healthcare settings where clinical notes, appointment triage, billing, marketing, reports and patient communications may increasingly involve automated tools.

For allied health professionals, the central risk is not that AI exists. The risk is relying on it without governance that matches the duty owed to clients. A physiotherapist, psychologist, podiatrist, speech pathologist or occupational therapist cannot usually point to software as a substitute for professional judgement. If an AI-generated summary misses a relevant symptom, an automated message gives unclear guidance, or a marketing tool overstates a treatment outcome, the practitioner and practice may still need to answer questions about supervision, consent, privacy and record keeping.

This is also where professional indemnity cover becomes a practical governance conversation. Policy wordings were not necessarily drafted with AI-assisted service delivery in mind. Some risks may sit within professional indemnity, while others may overlap with cyber, privacy, management liability or technology-related exposures. Practices should avoid assuming that a general reference to digital systems automatically covers every AI-related scenario.

Useful questions for practice owners include:

  • Which AI tools are used, who approved them and for what purpose?
  • Can staff explain what data is entered, stored or shared with vendors?
  • Are AI outputs checked by an appropriately qualified person before being used with clients?
  • Do consent, privacy and complaints procedures reflect the way technology is actually used?
  • Has the practice discussed AI-assisted workflows with independent brokers or advisers who understand professional risk?

The broader insurance market is signalling that audit trails, explainability and vendor oversight are becoming more important. For allied health clinics, that means AI should be treated like any other clinical or operational risk: documented, reviewed and matched to appropriate insurance settings. Staying close to industry news may help practices identify these emerging issues before they become claims problems.
