Latest APRA Figures Keep Income Protection Under the Spotlight

What the sector’s performance signals for policyholders reviewing cover

APRA’s latest life insurance performance data has again highlighted why income protection remains one of the most closely watched parts of the Australian insurance market.
While the broader life insurance sector has continued to show signs of improved stability, disability income products remain sensitive to claims trends, pricing assumptions and the length of time people stay off work after illness or injury.

For policyholders, the key message is not that income protection insurance is becoming less valuable. In many households, it remains the cover most directly connected to day-to-day financial survival because it can help replace part of an income when work is temporarily impossible. The more practical lesson is that these policies need regular attention, particularly when income, expenses, family responsibilities or employment arrangements change.

The latest figures build on previous APRA updates that placed disability income insurance under the spotlight. For insurers, the challenge is balancing sustainable pricing with products that still meet customer needs. For consumers, that can translate into changing premiums, tighter underwriting, more detailed medical questions, and policy features that should be read carefully before cover is accepted or renewed.

Australians reviewing their cover should look beyond the headline monthly premium. The waiting period, benefit period, definition of disability, offsets for other payments, treatment of fluctuating income and exclusions can all affect how useful a policy may be at claim time. A cheaper policy may not be better if it leaves a worker exposed during a long recovery period, while a more generous policy may be unnecessary if it does not match the household’s actual cash flow needs.

Self-employed people, contractors and professionals with variable income should be especially careful. Their claim calculations may depend on how earnings are evidenced, whether income is averaged, and how business expenses are treated. Those with mortgages, dependants or limited sick leave may also need to estimate the monthly benefit that would realistically help keep essential expenses covered.

The APRA data is a useful reminder that income protection is not a set-and-forget product. A policy bought years ago may no longer reflect current salary, debt levels, savings, employment status or health history. Equally, cancelling cover purely because premiums have risen can create risks if replacing that cover later becomes harder or more expensive.

A calm review can help. Check the product disclosure statement, compare the benefit settings with current household commitments, and ask questions before making changes. In a market where insurers are watching sustainability closely, consumers should be just as focused on whether their cover would perform when their income is most at risk.

Recent heavy vehicle industry reporting has again highlighted roadside compliance activity, with enforcement attention on mechanical condition, fatigue records, load restraint and day-to-day maintenance evidence.
