Why Policy Taxes Are Back on the Fitness Business Radar

A cost conversation that should also prompt a cover review

Recent insurance industry attention on taxes and levies added to premiums is a timely reminder for Australian fitness operators: the headline price of a policy is not always driven only by the insurer's base premium.
Government charges, emergency services funding arrangements and other statutory costs can all affect what a gym owner, personal trainer, yoga instructor or group fitness provider ultimately pays.

For small fitness businesses, that matters because insurance is usually not optional in practice. Landlords, councils, corporate clients, schools and event organisers often require evidence of public liability cover before a trainer can use a venue or run a session. Professional indemnity cover may also be important where programming, exercise guidance, rehabilitation-style support or nutrition-adjacent advice forms part of the service offering.

This latest discussion builds on previous coverage of levy reform, but the practical issue is broader than one state or one line item. When the total cost of cover rises, business owners can be tempted to reduce limits, remove optional sections or delay renewal. That may help cash flow in the short term, but it can create a much larger problem if a client injury, damaged premises, equipment loss or business interruption event occurs.

The better response is to separate affordability from adequacy. A policy that is cheaper because it excludes the activities you actually deliver, sets a low limit, or omits portable equipment may not be a saving at all. Equally, paying for sections that do not match your operating model can make cover feel more expensive than it needs to be.

Fitness professionals reviewing renewals may wish to look at a few practical checks:

  • Confirm that all training formats are declared, including outdoor sessions, online coaching, group classes, reformer Pilates, strength work and events.
  • Check whether venue contracts require specific public liability limits or interested party noting.
  • Review equipment, fit-out and stock values using current replacement costs, not old purchase prices.
  • Assess whether business interruption cover reflects how long it would take to resume trading after a major loss.
  • Read exclusions carefully, especially for higher-risk activities, subcontractors and advice-based services.

With costs under scrutiny, operators should also estimate realistic sums insured before comparing renewal options. The aim is not simply to pay the lowest premium, but to understand what protection your business would actually have when a claim tests the policy.

Insurance taxes may remain a policy debate for governments and the industry, but fitness professionals can still take control of the basics: accurate disclosures, suitable limits, current asset values and a renewal process that starts before the deadline.

Fresh motor insurance commentary across the Australian market is again pointing to a practical issue truck operators know well: repairing vehicles is becoming more complex, more expensive and, in some cases, slower. Recent complaints data from the Australian Financial Complaints Authority has again highlighted a pressure point that matters to rural Australia: insurance claims can become difficult when expectations, policy wording and evidence do not line up. While the figures cover the wider insurance market rather than farms alone, the themes are highly relevant for agricultural businesses dealing with storm damage, fire losses, machinery failures, fencing repairs or interrupted operations. - read more

Compensation Rules Put Professional Indemnity Cover Back in Focus
19 Aug 2026: Paige Estritori
Fresh industry attention on ASIC's expectations for compensation arrangements is a timely reminder that professional indemnity insurance should not be treated as a once-a-year renewal task. For Australian professionals who provide advice, compliance support, financial services, consulting, design, technology or outsourced business services, the adequacy of cover depends on how closely the policy matches the work actually being performed. - read more
